How to Keep Your Travel Trailer Cool This Summer
Taking a camping trip in the middle of the summer can get unbearably hot. Even with an air conditioner, the warm air will continue coming inside a travel trailer, and the cooling capabilities of these appliances might not quite be enough to keep you completely comfortable. That’s because the heat gets trapped very easily in the compact frame of a camper, so instead of relying entirely on your air conditioner, you should adapt your camping style with a few simple methods that we’ve discussed in this brief guide.
How to Park
Something as simple as parking correctly can make a big difference when camping in the summer heat. If you can park so that you’re covered by shade during the afternoon, that will prevent the most intense sun rays from heating up your travel trailer. Even if you can’t find a spot under a good tree, you can still position your rig to block out excess heat. Park it so that the side with more windows faces away from the sun during the afternoon. With the windows on the cooler side during the afternoon, the interior won’t get nearly as warm, which will keep you much more comfortable.
Improve the Ventilation
In a travel trailer, it’s very important to force all the warm air out as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, it gets trapped very easily, so you’ll need to be smart. For one thing, open the windows on the side facing away from the sun. That way, the cooler air will make its way in and balance out the warmer temperature. Also, get some fans and direct them towards the open windows. By pushing the warm air out, more fresh air can get inside and keep your travel trailer much cooler. Finally, we all know that heat rises, so if you don’t already have attic vents, make sure to get some installed before your next trip.
Cooking
When you prepare meals inside a travel trailer, you’ll generate a lot of extra heat and moisture, which just gets trapped in the interior. We recommend using a few alternatives for food preparation. The best idea is to make cold meals, like sandwiches and salads. However, if you want to eat hot meals, consider using an outdoor grill, and if you don’t have one, prepare the food over the fireplace. These will make you a lot warmer outside, but at least the extra heat won’t get trapped in your camper. Finally, microwaves generate heat, but not nearly as much as the stove or oven, so warming up a quick meal is also a great way to serve a nice meal in the middle of the afternoon.
With all these methods, you’ll block out a majority of the warm air, and potentially keep your travel trailer cooler than the outdoor temperature. Implementing these strategies will also make your air conditioner much more effective. If you have any questions, get in touch with us at RV Connection in Lawton, OK.
